Complete Filipino Wedding Entourage Guide

Nupta

Ang Filipino wedding entourage is one of the most beautiful — and most complex — parts of a Filipino wedding. Walang ibang culture na may ganito ka-elaborate na entourage.

The Traditional Roles

Principal Sponsors (Ninong at Ninang)

The heart of the Filipino wedding entourage. These are the couples who serve as your wedding "godparents" — usually older married couples who have been significant in your life.

Traditionally, you have 2 to 4 pairs of principal sponsors, but modern Filipino weddings can have up to 10 or more pairs. They walk down the aisle, sit in a designated area, and often contribute financially to the wedding.

Secondary Sponsors

These are the sponsors for the traditional Filipino wedding rituals:

  • Cord Sponsors (Veil Sponsors) — Place the ceremonial cord (yugal) over the couple, symbolizing unity
  • Veil Sponsors — Drape the veil over the bride's head and the groom's shoulders
  • Coin Sponsors (Arrhae) — Present the 13 coins that symbolize prosperity and the groom's pledge to provide

The Entourage

  • Best Man & Maid of Honor — Your right-hand people on the big day
  • Groomsmen & Bridesmaids — Your squad, your support system
  • Flower Girl(s) — Usually young girls who scatter petals
  • Ring Bearer — Carries the wedding rings
  • Bible Bearer — Carries the ceremonial Bible
  • Coin Bearer — Carries the arrhae (coins)

How to Organize Your Entourage

The biggest challenge? Keeping track of everyone. With 10+ ninongs, secondary sponsors, and the full entourage, it's easy to lose track.

This is exactly why we built Nupta's entourage section. Every role has a dedicated spot. You add names, and your wedding website automatically organizes them beautifully.

Tips for Choosing Your Entourage

  1. Start with your principal sponsors early — they're the hardest to finalize
  2. Consider your budget — more sponsors often means more coordination
  3. Mix family and friends — traditionally, principal sponsors are family, but modern weddings mix it up
  4. Don't forget to brief your secondary sponsors — they need to know what to do during the ceremony
